What is Argentine Tango?
'El tango es una droga; una adiccion...'
Scent of a Woman; Dance With Me; Take the Lead; A Tango Lesson; Dancing With the Stars......all of these have tango scenes; yet only 'A Tango Lesson' comes close to capturing the true essence of Argentine Tango.....yet it still does show the true dance....
Argentine Tango (in comparison with American Tango, International Ballroom Tango & Hollywood 'Stage'/ 'Fantasia' Tango) is unique in that the two dancers have a 'connection' in which the lead is guided and followed with absolutely no pulling or pushing, inside the 'tango embrace' ; hence many people describe the dance as 'sensual'. of It is as if there is an unspoken form of communication occurring, and in fact, many people describe Argentine Tango as a form of conversation, with its own grammar, vocabulary, etiquette and even dialects!
What is best about Argentine Tango is that it is a social dance; although there are a few competitions around the world, yet the grand majority of the people dance for the sake of dance;to enjoy the beautiful music, to embrace/be embraced by another human being and to meet and make new friends who share a common passion.
As a social dance, in Argentine Tango you do not see unwanted flirting or pick-up lines, dirty looks or cold shoulders nor improper /unwanted contact like you would in other forms of dancing. There is a certain code of 'etiquette' all 'tangueros' follow and thus the atmosphere at a tango party is very relaxed, friendly and enjoyable.
Best of all, with tango now found throughout the world, you can dance and make new friends (or visit old friends!) anywhere in the world, whether you are on a business trip or holiday.
